  2. Instructions for using a compiled Prospero client:
  3.  
  4. This file is available via anonymous FTP from PROSPERO.ISI.EDU in
  5. pub/prospero/compiled-clients/INSTRUCTIONS.
  6.  
  7. We are experimentally providing an already compiled Prospero client
  8. for those interested in testing the Prospero menu browser.  You can
  9. get the full Prospero distribution via anonymous FTP from
  10. PROSPERO.ISI.EDU in pub/prospero/prospero.tar.Z or
  11. pub/prospero/prospero-new.tar.Z. The menu browser client we are
  12. providing here is only available in the prospero-new distribution,
  13. since it is still not robust enough to be included in the Prospero
  14. beta release.

  16. At the moment, the only compiled Prospero client available is on the
  17. Sun 4, under SunOS 4.1.3.
  18.  
  19. To get the client, open an anonymous FTP connection to the directory
  20. pub/prospero/compiled-clients on the host PROSPERO.ISI.EDU.  Go into
  21. the appropriate subdirectory for your system architecture and
  22. operating system (this will always be sun4.SunOS4.1.3 for now).

  24. Get the files 'menu' and 'vcache'.  Put them somewhere you can run
  25. them.  Set the environment variable P_BINARIES to the name of the
  26. directory where the 'vcache' program is located.  (vcache is an
  27. auxiliary program that does much of the work of file retrieval.)

  29. Type 'menu' to run the menu browser.  It will display the default
  30. starting menu we provide in the prototype virtual system.  IF you run
  31. the menu client with the -D9 option, the Prospero protocol messages
  32. the client sends and receives will be displayed for you.

  34. If you are interested in the Prospero protocol, you may find it particularly
  35. interesting to see how we represent searches; go into the 'Online Databases'
  36. directory of the root and pick the item 'archie FTP database at
  37. SURAnet', and look at the attributes that were sent across associated
  38. with that link.

  40. A bit of documentation on the menu browser is available in the
  41. Prospero user's manual (pub/prospero/doc/prospero-user-manual.PS.Z,
  42. from PROSPERO.ISI.EDU).

  44. The next version of the menu browser will support modification of
  45. virtual systems.
